Cultivating a strong company culture is challenging enough during the best of times. Throw in a global pandemic, and things get really interesting.

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we won’t be returning to our pre-virus ways. Working from home (or remotely) is officially here to stay, not just because of the pandemic, but because employees want more flexibility in how and where they do their jobs. And tech companies are leading the way: Shopify, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Salesforce have all announced a shift to remote work.

Without a doubt, the need for today’s leaders to communicate and foster a clear vision, team cohesiveness and employee well-being is greater than ever. To help our network navigate this new reality, we invited startup veteran and leadership coach Charity Joy and organizational psychologist and executive coach Dr Francine MacInnis to host a two-part digital workshop called “Culture Check for Remote Work.” …

In 2017, Real partnered with leading Quebec institutions to launch Orbit, a fund to back ambitious Quebec-based startups at their earliest stages of development. Orbit’s investment thesis centers on identifying areas of local excellence. Given the strength of Quebec’s universities, we had a strong feeling from the start that companies building deep tech, or “disruptive solutions built around unique, protected or hard-to-reproduce technological or scientific advances”, could be a pillar of our portfolio.

Looking back after three years, it’s clear that our instinct was right. Orbit has made a dozen deep tech investments across a variety of domains, including biotech, energy, quantum, semiconductors, robotics, ag tech and neuroscience. Building the portfolio and supporting our deep tech founders has been eye-opening at many levels. In this post, I share some of our motivations for investing in the category and lessons we’ve learned helping our companies grow. …

Lucky #13. The COVID-19 pandemic has rocked the world. For FounderFuel, it has fundamentally challenged our paradigm of startup acceleration. Like our startups, we have embraced the crisis as an opportunity to reinvent ourselves. The FounderFuel team has created a virtual accelerator from the ground up for our 13th cohort, creating a new structure to honour our long-standing commitment to accelerating startups — despite not being physically present at Notman House.

We choose to maintain our commitments to founders amidst these uncertain times, to continue elevating them to their fullest potential by providing them with advice, stage-specific support and access to networks to help their companies scale rapidly.

Diversity of thought and experience is what great societies are built upon and within. This is seen in every facet of our existence. Diversity, cooperation, curiosity and mutual understanding are the foundation for leading more fulfilled lives and the path to better companies, better education, better relationships, better health, better outcomes. The only way we build a thriving, abundant world is by engaging with each other authentically, listening to and learning from each other, and making changes that reflect the needs of all people. …

The secret to startup success is much more than what you build

When launching a startup, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that the product you’re developing is both the means and the ends of your business. But if recent times have taught us anything, it’s that the real game-changers are often entirely outside of our control, and the companies that can best leverage those curveballs are the ones that have a crystal clear sense of purpose, or as our Partner, JS Cournoyer, would say, they are growing and staying true to their essence.

Essense as the sum of its parts?

What is a company’s essence? According to JS, the first step to understanding it is for a founder to find his/her own essence. …
